Little Green Radicals is a clothing range for babies and children made exclusively with organic and Fairtrade certified cotton in Egypt and India. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees farmers a minimum price and gives them a premium which they use for projects like extra medical care or education. Organic cotton farming is very different from growing conventional cotton. Chemical pesticides are not allowed, so instead of artificial fertilisers and regular toxic chemical spraying our farmers use guano (bird droppings) as their main fertiliser and good bugs to kill the bad bugs. For example, ladybirds are introduced to eat harmful bugs like aphids. Each week a technical expert visits the farmer and agrees a prescription for the coming weeks work, and a bug count is taken to see if the good bugs are winning the war. It is more labour intensive than conventional farming, which is good in a country where unemployment and underemployment are endemic. The cotton crop is rotated with other crops such as sweet potato, beans and corn, which replenishes the soils’ natural nutrients and makes the farmers less dependent on one crop. Yields are higher than in many other cotton growing areas. Once harvested the cotton is guaranteed to be bought from the farmer at a fixed price, giving security to the farmer. Sweatshop – free manufacture in Egypt Little Green Radicals have various independent inspectors that verify their manufacturing as sweatshop free. Since May 2006 all their prints have been produced using the most ecological water based inks available. |
